The Cochrane Street United Church Senior Choir has a long history of choral singing. The choir is conducted by Oliver Dingwell. Choir practice is on Thursday’s at 7:30. New members are always welcome.
The Senior Choir has continued to expand and develop under the dedicated and competent guidance of our Organist and Choir Director, Oliver Dingwell.
During the winter months, as well as preparing for weekly services, the choir was involved in several events. It performed at the Valentine’s Dinner and Talent Show and participated in the wedding ceremony of fellow choir members Tarie and Ebonee in March.
On Ash Wednesday, the choir joined with the choir of M.U.N. School of Music and Director Jakub Martinec in the presentation of Faure’s Requiem.
Around the World in 40 Days – A Living Faith was the theme of the worship during Lent. Each service had a distinct focus and emphasized the music of specific cultures, as guest speakers spoke of customs in Europe, Africa and Central America and South America.
Our church hosted the three hour Good Friday service and welcomed the Senior Choir and Men’s Choir of George Street United Church. Directed by Oliver and assisted by guest conductors Carolyn Sturge Sparkes and Andrea Powell, the combined group presented the accompanying sacred music for the Seven Last Words of Christ. This practice of a joint choir and service occurred on several occasions throughout the year.
Easter Sunday was a joyous celebration with music under the direction of Patricia Young. As at other special services, we appreciated the musical contribution of Gillian Sheppard on the flute, Melissa Barbeau playing the trumpet and the concluding peal of handbells.
The music for summer worship was arranged by our Minister of Music Patricia Young and included guest soloists Alanna Fraize and Peter Ralph. Again, we appreciate Patricia’s devotion to our church.
A joint service of the four downtown United Churches was held at Cochrane Street United Church on August 31.
In September, with new members expanding our choir, we were happy to welcome back Cheryl and Byron Briggs and Karen Critch Chaytor. As well, M.U.N. choral students Jody Lear, Kristian Butt, Jacob Lawrence and Ryan Dillon joined their colleagues, Maggie, Kyle and Oliver to give us a fuller complement.
We continued to prepare appropriate music for morning services with special selections for Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day.
On October 23rd, an evening service of music with the United Church Moderator Rev. Dr. Gary Paterson as guest speaker was a highlight. Music groups from several congregations gathered and performed during the event.
Throughout the year our choir contributed its music to the residents of Glenbrook Home and at a Christmas service at H.M. Penitentiary.
As Advent approached, our focus turned to the music of the season that would culminate in our Service of Lessons and Carols with their Honours Frank and Patricia Fagan in attendance. Inspiring performances by Oliver Dingwell and guest soloist Amy Grainger were much appreciated.
At the traditional Christmas Eve Family Service, parents joined the youth choir and the soloist Brad Antle in assisting the Sunday School performers. This was followed at 9 pm by Carols, Candles and Communion, an impressive celebration of Christmas with soloist Alanna Fraize.
As the year ends, we look forward to the further development of our choir as it participates in upcoming church activities
