COCHRANE STREET UNITED CHURCH AT WORK IN THE COMMUNITY
One of the ways we live out our faith is by reaching out to help others in our community. Throughout the year we collect items for organizations such as Bridges to Hope, Street Reach, Choices for Youth, Kids East Smart and the SPCA. The Ministries Committee at Cochrane Street organizes three major outreach projects each year. Community partners and congregation members give generously of their time and money to make theme a success. In September 2014, Cochrane Street will be working with Project Grace to give the gift of music to children in the area through the “Patricia Young Youth Choral Academy”
DEAL OF A MEAL
Every year in late February or early March, the members of Cochrane Street United Church offers a “Sunday Dinner” to the clients of various outreach agencies in the city. It is an evening of fun, food, music, and fellowship.
BBQ BLOCK PARTY
On the last weekend in July, members of Cochrane Street United Church host a community block party and BBQ. We first started in Bannerman Park and moved to the church property when Bannerman Park was closed for construction. We grill hamburgers and hot dogs for anyone who wants one, two or more! We invite neighbours and clients of various outreach agencies to join us for the all the fun. The Brew Crew entertain us with their fabulous music.
BAGS TO SCHOOL
Bags to School began a number of years ago when members of the Ministries Committee realized that children were going to school without the necessary supplies. The Bridges to Hope offices were located at Cochrane Street at that point and both groups worked together to pack school bags for clients. What began with 75 school bags has grown to a program that packs over 1000 bags for children across the province. Bridges to Hope takes the lead in organizing and members of Cochrane Street United Church are still actively involved in helping with the program.
